THE ELECTROSCOPE
The ELECTROSCOPE is a device used to measure the presents of small electrical charges.
This device can be used to test for the presents of Static Electricity.
To build this project you will need the following material:
1) a Glass Jar with a wide mouth
2) a piece of #12 copper wire or a Cloths hanger
3) a 1/4" piece of plywood to fit over the top of the Jar or a Plastic lid
4) a sheet of Aluminum Foil
Bend the wire as shown in the picture and put two pieces of Aluminum Foil as shown in the
picture. When installing the Aluminum Foil on the wire, fold the ends loosely around the
wire. Take some Aluminum Foil and make a 2 inche ball. Place the ball at the end of the wire
as shown in the picture. Take a piece of Wool, Carpet, or Seat Cover and rub it on the
Aluminum Ball. The two pieces of Aluminum foil should move away from each other, indicating
the presents of Electricity. The two pieces of foil move away from each other because the
electrical charge on both pieces are the same. The Laws of Physics says that, " Electrical
charges of the same polarity, oppose each other."
